essaire: ilfallait représenter la même scène à la consécration et de limpéra-trice et de lempereur. La présence de petits personnages trapusse détachant du fond, lagitation qui se remarque chez les porte-enseigne, sont les marques dun style nouveau plus pittoresque età tendance baroque. Les huit reliefs de grand format de lArc de Constantin, ettrois autres reliefs du Palais des Conservateurs (il y en avaitquatre autrefois), pourraient provenir de larc érigé en 176 enlhonneur de Marc-Aurèle. Ces reliefs reproduisent des scènes dela vie de lEmpereur dans un tel esprit de tradition quils seraientdifficilement identifiables si on ne les reliait au style des monu-ments officiels depuis lAra Pacis. La composition des fonds rap-pelle les panneaux de style claudien. Il sagit de façades detemples et de portiques nettement dessinées, représentées sansperspective, dominant dans le tiers supérieur des groupes de VII Peinture murale à Pompéi. je quart du jf siècle ap. La netteté et la précision descontours des figures sont amoindries au profit de la profondeuret des effets pittoresques. Lemploi du foret apparaît ici commele moyen technique dune expression nouvelle. On décida lédification de la colonne commémorative deMarc-Aurèle, qui fut achevée sous le règne de Commode, pourcélébrer ses victoires sur les Marcomans et autres peuples nor-diques. Cest un monument très représentatif du style antonin tardif (Planche n° 46), sur lequel sont décrits des épisodes guer-riers, comparables aux épisodes de la colonne Trajane. Il sagitde scènes isolées, placées bout à bout, plutôt que dun récitcohérent et suivi.
