Some 75 people while at the service were killed and 90 injured, owing to a blow from a shell which caused a part of the roof to fall. The church stands near the Hotel de Ville the La Fere road, an outlying spur of the massif of St.Gobain. The three gun-pits were arranged approximatelyin the form of an equilateral triangle, the apex of whichpointed toward Paris. They were all well under the crestline. Each consisted of a concrete pit in the shape of a 17 ON THE WESTERN FRONT long and deep trench, to which a railway ran back from theLaon-La Fere line. At the front end of each a concreteplatform was constructed on which the gun-carriage rested,carefully covered by branches of trees which, combined withthe neighboring wood, served to protect the position fromview.
