Em 6 de agosto de 1848 a Lei provincial 213 autorizou a construção de uma casa de detenção no Recife. Com projeto do engenheiro pernambucano José Mamede Alves Ferreira, foi assinada uma portaria, em 16 de janeiro de 1850, determinando sua construção, que se iniciou no mesmo ano. Em 25 de abril de 1855 a Casa de Detenção foi inaugurada, mais sua conclusão só em 1867 Em 1973 o presídio foi desativado. Os presos ainda existentes foram transferidos para o Presídio Agrícola de Itamaracá O artista plástico Francisco Brennand teve a ideia que se concretizou, em transformar o antigo presidio em casa de cultura, e o projeto para sua restauração foi elaborado pela arquiteta Lina Bo Bardi. On August 6, 1848, provincial Law 213 authorized the construction of a detention house in Recife. On April 25, 1855 the House of Detention was inaugurated, but its completion only in 1867 In 1973 the prison was deactivated. The remaining prisoners were transferred to the Agricultural Prison of Itamaracá The plastic artist Francisco Brennand had the idea that came true, to transform the old prison into a house of culture, and the project for its restoration was prepared by the architect Lina Bo Bardi.
