Summary[edit]
Description'Y Waliau' or Slate Dressing area of Sied Australia - geograph.org.uk - 286291.jpg |
English: 'Y Waliau' or Slate Dressing area of Sied Australia. Right up to the closure of the quarry in 1969, the slate dressing process at Australia was totally unmechanised. In some other parts of the quarry, dressing machines were used to trim the slates into their final size and squareness. Dressing was a complex process which involved (a) splitting the sawn blocks along the cleavage lines into thin sheets, (b) marking the slate shape with a nail tipped measuring stick, and (c) using a knife to cut the slate to shape. Rotary dressing machines for shaping and squaring were introduced into 6 of Dinorwig's 14 sheds - 170 machines in all. The working area of each team of 4 or 6 men (half of whose members worked on the rock face producing rock for the other half to dress) was demarcated by the horizontal slate slabs.
