Description

"Geschenk aan Amsterdam van Hunter Cigarette CY".

Oorspronkelijk symboliseert Het Lieverdje de straatjongens van Amsterdam, altijd op zoek naar kattenkwaad maar met een gouden hart. Het Comité tot Activiteit in Amsterdam, ooit opgericht om de St. Nicolaasintocht te organiseren, nam het initiatief om de beeldhouwer Carel Kneulman opdracht te geven voor een beeldje van een straatschoffie. Het gipsen model werd op 2 mei 1959 onthuld door Jan en Nel Voortman. Maar na een paar dagen was het verdwenen. Henri Knap kwam in een gesprek met de organisator van festiviteiten en kinderspelen Sanny Hemerik tot de conclusie, dat er een bronzen beeldje moest komen. Hij benaderde een Rotaryrelatie, werkzaam bij sigarettenfabrikant Crescent uit Eindhoven en vond deze bereid het project te financieren. Op 10 september 1960 onthulde de echtgenote van burgemeester Van Hall het Lieverdje. In de jaren zestig werd het door de sigarettenfabriek gesponsorde beeldje het trefpunt van de "anti-rookmagiër" Robert Jasper Grootveld en zijn aanhang. Zo ontstond rond het Lieverdje de beweging Provo. Eind 1966 werd het stil rondom het Lieverdje.
