Description
English: 'Britannia' being towed off the coast of Candia [Crete]; illustration to Falconer's 'The Shipwreck' (1811 ed., p. 9)
The fourth of a series of ten drawings, of which the collection holds nine (PAF5913–21). The printed description of the plate based on it, probably written by Pocock, reads: 'Light, variable, and transient airs of Wind. The Ship appears under all her Sails. Steering Sails alternately set and hauled down. The Yards braced and squared, occasionally to catch the breeze – Boats ahead, towing the Ship off the Shore.' Signed by the artist and dated, lower right. For further details see the first of the series, PAF5913: for an anonymous early copy of this one, better indicating its now faded original colour, see PAJ1643. Exhibited: NMM Pocock exhib. (1975) no. 36.
