Summary[edit]

Description
English: 'ALI BIN MUHAMMAD AL-JURJANI (D. AH 816/1413 AD): KITAB AL-ISHARA ILA MAQASID 'ILM AL-KALAM

IRAN, LATE 14TH/EARLY 15TH CENTURY

On philosophy, incomplete, Arabic manuscript on paper, 193ff. plus 2 fly-leaves, each folio with 26ll. of black naskh, titles in red, numerous marginal notes, later red underlines, some staining, minor repairs, incomplete at end, in brown stamped morocco Folio 10 3/8 x 7in. (26.4 x 17.5cm.)

This is a commentary by al-Jurjani on a theological work of 'Adud al-Din al-Iji (d. AH 756/1355 AD) called al-Mawakif fi 'ilm al-kalam. It is likely that this is a contemporary or early copy of this work. Al-Jurjani wrote on many subjects, mainly in Persian. He was one of the scholars which Timur took back to Samarqand.

Another contemporary copy of Kitab al-Ishara dated Shawwal AH 807/2-30 April 1405 AD in Samarqand was sold in these Rooms, 20 April 1999, lot 319.
