Summary[edit]

Description

"Yankee ingenuity repairs bridge" (SC 195664-S), National Museum of Health and Medicine

"Description: "Yankee ingenuity repairs bridge. Pont de L'Arc bridge, which spans the Arc River, near Aix, France is an important railroad communications link for the ports Marseille, Toulon, and other coastal towns. German demolitions destroyed the bridge. Plans to repair it called for 3 weeks' work and a Bailey Bridge, but this idea was discarded as taking too much time. So men of the 343rd Engineer Regiment scouted around for a solution. They found it in a captured German railroad gun, discovering that by dismantling the huge gun and accessories, the remaining carriage would make a perfect section for the bombed out part of the bridge. Members of the 343rd Engineer Regiment are moving this captured Nazi railroad carriage (with gun removed) into places to span the blown out section of the Pont de l’Arc bridge. Note the motor driven hydraulic jacks still on side of carriage which were used to lower gun from rails for firing."
