Summary[edit]
Description"Remember The Dead" - geograph.org.uk - 36858.jpg |
English: "Remember The Dead" The Plaque reads Remember The Dead Fight For The Living The Whitebeam sapling tree in the picture was planted on International Workers Memorial Day (April 28th) 2003. by joint General Secretaries Roger Lyons and Derek Simpson of the amicus trade union. It commemorates all those workers who have been killed, injured or made ill by their work. Workers memorial day is marked by labour activists in over 100 countries worldwide. The memorial is in the grounds of the amicus London Regional office in Bermondsey St. In the UK each year we kill between 200 & 300 workers in accidents and many 1000s die from work related diseases, the cost to the country of this human tragedy is around 2-3% of GDP.
2008 update: amicus is no more and is now part of Unite http://www.amicustheunion.org/ after merger with the T&GWU. The London office is now in Islington. The fate of the tree is in the hands of the new occupiers of the office. In 2007 there were 241 workplace deaths in the U.K (not including traffic accidents) this is an increase of 11% over 2006. |
