1875, HorticulturalHall and the Main Building in January, 1876,and Memorial Hall and Agricultural Hall inApril. In February, 1876, Congress appropri-ated $1,500,000 to complete the payments for thebuildings, and thus enabled the Commission toopen the Exhibition free from debt. The formal opening of the Centennial Ex-hibition was effected on May loth, 1876. Atnine oclock A. m. on that day the gates of thegrounds, with the exception of those at the eastend of the Main Building, were opened to thepublic at the established rate of admission offifty cents each. The Main Building, MemorialHall, and Machinery Hall were reserved forguests and exhibitors until the conclusion of theceremonies, at about one p. m., when all restric-tions were withdrawn.
