Description

A Lazarus Department Store window display depicting figures on a canal boat with a stagecoach in background. Simon Lazarus founded the first Lazarus Company store in the Parsons Building in 1851. The store eventually occupied most of the building. Simons’ sons, Fred and Ralph succeeded him in the business and when Ralph died in 1903, Fred incorporated the business and renamed it the F. & R. Lazarus Company. The Company has been located in downtown Columbus on South High Street near West Town Street throughout its’ existence. The first new Lazarus store building designed by local architects, Richards, McCarty & Bulford, opened at 141 South High Street on August 9, 1909. Many additions and expansions, as well as branch locations have been added over the years. Reverse reads: "1851 marked the end of an era ... of the leisurely trips by canal boat on the Ohio Canal , and of teeming National Road traffic over the covered bridge at Broad Street. The new railroads gave Central Ohio quick contact with the world."
