Butthe flag-officer invariably declined, saying inone of his letters to General Pope that theattempt would result in the sacrifice of theboat, her officers and men, which sacrificeI would not be justified in making. During this correspondence the bombard-ment still went on, but was attended withsuch poor results that it became a subjectof ridicule among the officers of Popesarmy, one of whom (Colonel Gilmore, ofChillicothe, Ohio) is reported to have saidtliat often when they met, and incjuiry wasmade respecting the operations of the flotilla,the answer would generally ))e : Oh ! it is stillbombarding the State of Tennessee at longrange. On March 20th Flag-Officer Foote con-sulted his commanding officers, through Com-mander Stemble, as to the practicability oftaking a gun-boat past the enemys forts toNew Madrid, and all except myself wereopposed to the enterprise, believing withFoote that the attempt to pass the bat-teries would result in the almost certaindestruction of the boat. I did not think so, was well known that the Confederates had anumber of small gun-boats below, and wereengaged in building several large and power-ful vessels, of which the renowned Arka?isaswas one.
