"Heading for shore," (BUMED 09-7928-30), U.S. Navy BUMED Library and Archives Description: "Heading For Shore - A heavily loaded LST (Landing Ship, Tank), part of a convoy, heading for a landing on one of the islands in the Philippines. Heavier War Bond purchases in the Mighty 7th War Loan will make possible the ships and equipment necessary for many more such landings. WWII Pacific Island Combat General. Official U.S. Signal Corps Photos, from U.S. Treasury." LSTs were ships built during World War II to carry tanks, vehicles, cargo, and troops directly onto shore in amphibious operations. The bow opens into a large door with a ramp to unload the vehicles.
