Just then, happily, Mr. Johannsencame in and took up the subject, and made it all perfectly CTIVE WORK 41 clear that it was an illustration of a sin-stained heart,—somuch pains taken to make it beautiful and just like thegreat original pattern, but, unlike the picture, it was notirremediably spoilt. VALLEY OF SILINDUNG. is throwing me into the sea to teach me to swim, which isobviously the case. Six native teachers with their families have just arrivedfor an eighteen months preparation for ordination, and 42 HESTER NEEDHAM AND HER WORK I shall probably be teaching the wives for an hour daily,so you can imagine how much I shall have to learn between,and how difficult it is to keep to my two hours rest daily;in fact, on Sundays I cannot have it, and do not want it. Bartimeus, the blind brother of one of the chiefs, isbecome my teacher. He makes a little livelihood by sellingthings on commission for the Dutch soldiers, which is byno means a nice occupation, so now he has entirely giventhat up, and belongs, as it were, to me, beginning withto-day, though of course 1 do not really want him nearlyall day long.
