Summary[edit]

Description

Poet Emma Lazarus spent the last several years of her brief life in this house. She died at the age of 36. The house was bought in 1883 by her father, Moses Lazarus, a wealthy sugar merchant.

Lazarus wrote her sonnet, "The New Colossus," on request in 1883 to help raise money for the pedestal being built for the Statue of Liberty, then being created in France as a gift to the American people. The completed copper sculpture was dedicated in 1886. Lazarus's sonnet was mounted on a bronze tablet inside the base in 1903.
