^ FARRAGUT AND MOBILE BAY—PERSONALi^ REMINISCENCES. I most heartily wish that all his fellow-countrymen—you companions especially—could have known that noble Americanseaman, David Glasgow Farragut, who was trained from hisearly boyhood to give to his country the very best service ofwhich he was capable. When Flag Officer Farragut hoistedhis flag on the Hartford at the Philadelphia Navy Yard inJanuary, 18G2, I was a Master in the Navy and navigator ofthat ship. On being presented to him, in company with theother officers, he took me a little aside and told me, in thekindest possible way, that he was sorry to have to tell me Iwas not to remain on the Hartford, but was to be relieved byanother Master (a grandson of Mr. Crittenden). His kindsympathy touched me, and I smilingly told him I was that:^ortunate Master who would sail aboard his flagship, andhoped and trusted that with the discharge of my duties Iwould win his confidence.
