e. Male and female, inwinter, upper parts ashy, wings white marked, neck faintchestnut; under parts white marked with grayish. Imma-ture, forehead white. Bill and feet dark. Length about7.75. Song and Other Notes: ■■ Shrill cry, crut-cree-teet, and tweet or twick. Haunts: A true bird of ocean and seas. RIVER DUCKS lt7 178 RIVER DUCKS. No. 169. RED BREASTED MERGANSER. Order: Anseres. Genus: Merganser. Family: Anatidae. Species: M. serrator. Distribution: A common transient visitor, rarely wintering. Date of Arrival:March, April. Date of Departure: Middle of October, throunfli November. General Plumage: Male, upper parts white and black, rump ashen marked, headblack crested, white eye ring; under parts wliile, throat black,upper breast with wide rufous band, black streaked. Fuinaleand immature, crown brownish, rest of head and throat rutbus,other parts white and ashen. Bill red, feet orange. Lengthabout 22.00. Song and Other Notes:A ^croak. Hamits: Rivers and ocean. RED BREASTED MERGANSER. 180 RIVER DUCKS. No. 170. BLACK DUCK. Genus: Anas. Species: A. obscura. Distribution: An abundant transient visitor, breeding sparingly. Date of Arrival: March and April Date of Departure: Latter part of August, through October, General Plumage: Upper parts dark brown, head darker, buff marked ; underparts brownish, buff marked, wing purple black marked.Bill greenish, feet red. Length about 22.00. Song and Other Notes: Loud Quack-Quack-Quack. Haunts: Marshes, ponds and often sea. RIVER DUCKS.
