OLD=SQUAW. 164 OCEAN BIROS. No. 161 OLD=SQUAW. Genus: Clsm^ula. Species: C. hyemalis. Distribution: A common winter visitor along the coast. Date of Arrival:November. Date of Departure:Middle of April. General Plumage: Male in winter, upper parts white, blackish band on back,wings and spot on side of head blackish, cheeks dusky, longtail feathers blackish, belly white, breast blackish brown,throat and neck ring white. Male, in summer, top of head,neck and back black ; under parts Avliite, black on upperbelly. Female, in winter, upper parts blackish, grayishmarked, sides of head and neck whitish, breast dusky, bellywhite. Female, in summer head black marked. Bill black,yellow band on tip, leet blackish. Length about 21.00. Song and Other Notes: Scolding or talking notes, as o-onc-o-onc-ough, egh-ough-egh. Haunts: A bird of the ocean. OCEAN BIRDS. 165
