Length about 6.50. Song and Other Notes: A half mournful, half cheerful warble, a low call note. Haunts: A bird of the orchard, garden and woodland. MARSH AND SWAMP BIRDS. 116 MARSH AND SWAMP BIRDS. No. 126. AMERICAN BITTERN. Order: Herodiones, Genus: Botaurus. Family: Ardeidae. Species: B. lentiginosus. Distribution: A summer resident of New England. Date of Arrival: Middle of April. Date of Departure:November. General Plumage: Upper parts brown, buff and grayish, head slaty; underparts cream buff, streaked with brownish and grayish ; sidesof neck marked with a sliining black streak. Immaturedeeper buff. Bill yellowish, edge black, feet and legs yel-lowish. Length about 28.00. Song and Other Notes: A loud weird booming sound. Haunts: Meadows, marshes and swampy land. MARSH AKD SWAMP BIRDS. 117

AMERICAN BITTERN. 118 MARSH AND SWAMP BIRDS. No. 127. GREAT BLUE HERON. Genus: Ardea. Species: A. herodias. Distribution: A summer resident of New England, most commonly breed-ing in the northern portions. Date of Arrival:April and May. Date of Departure: September through October. General Plumage: Upper parts slaty, crown black, divided by white, blackcrest, neck brownish gray, in front a line of black, white andyellowish, bend of wing chestnut; under parts black, white andyellowish streaked, breast with a patch of black and whitefeathers, leg feathers buff. Feet and legs black, upper man-dible greenish yellow, under yellow. Immature similar,crown black, throat white, black on sides and breast, plumeslacking, paler. Length about 45.00 Song and Other Notes: Harsh quawks and croaks. Haunts: MarsheSj and about bodies of water. MARSH AND SWAMP BIRDS. 119
