Lengthabout 8.00. Song and Other Notes: 1 am unable to find any description of their notes. Haunts: Along the coast. OCEAN BIRDS. 151 No. 153. GREAT BLACK BACKED GULL. Order: Longipennes. Genus: Larus. Family: Laridas. Species: L. marinus. Distribution: A winter visitor along the coast. Date of Arrival:September. Date of Departure:April. General Plumage: In summer, upper parts grayish black, wings white tipped ;under parts white. In winter, similar, head streaked.Immature, upper parts brownish marked with buff, longwing leathers dark, a few white tipped, head region grayish.tail black and white; under parts white, ashy marked.Bill black, base yellowish, feet yellow. Length about 29.00. Song and Other Notes: Various loud noisy cries. Haunts: A bird of the ocean while with us. 152 OCEAN BIRDS.

Distribution: An abundant winter visitor along the coast^ often driven farinland by storm. Date of Arrival:November. Date of Departure:Last of March. General Plumage: In summer, upper parts grayish white, wings black tipped,other plumage white. In winter, head regions grayish; im-mature, upper parts grayish black, buff marked, long wino-feathers dark brown; under parts ashen brown. Bill yellowdark band, feet flesh color. Length about 24.00. Song and Other Notes: Cries like akak-kakak. Haunts: A bird of the ocean and large rivers. 154 OCEAN BIRDS.
