"Australian" steamboat at Canyon City in Yukon Territory, ca. 1899

Description

During the Klondike Gold Rush, there were three Canyon Cities in operation in the Yukon. Another photograph's caption (spl_ap_00035) places the location of this Canyon City on Sixtymile River which was a tributary of the Yukon River. The "Australian" was constructed by the Canadian Development Company in Bennett, British Columbia in 1899.; Canyon City. [Symbol.] No. 602A.; Exact location along Sixtymile River is unknown.

This photo, showing the Gleaner and Australian in what seems certain to be the same location, describes it as "the terminus of portage tramway company at Miles Canyon Landing", and says it is "[p]robably the Canyon and White Horse Rapids Tramway Company used for portaging around the Whitehorse Rapids on the Yukon River."
