this Branch was advised toarrange for a committee to prepare substitutes on each of theapproximately forty items coming under this group. As a result of the work of this committee, substitutes weresubmitted on quite a number of these items, such substitutionsbeing within the range of good manufacturing possibilities, andwere under consideration by the committee for adoption at thetime of the signing of the armistice. It is the opinion of this Branch that consideration should begiven to the possibility of substituting malleable iron and steelfor this textile equipment, the same being treatedwithsome rust-proofing finish, as it is believed that research made along this lineby the Government would result in the abolition of compositionmetal; namely,brass, and adoption of steel and malleable iron onat least a portion of the forty items that come under this group.
