Some of the items purchased by this Division, and thecircumstances connected with same, are as follows: Musical Instruments Facing the problem of enormous increases in band require-ments, coupled with most limited American facilities for themanufacture of musical instruments, this Branch, throughthe familiarity of its personnel with the market, was able tomake successful negotiations for approximately 143,000 musi-cal instruments, which were secured at a saving of about$500,000 less than the prices at which the government had beenable hitherto to obtain. Suggestions were made for improvingthe method of repairing instruments, and better technical fieldassistance. Sheet Music for Bands One of the most interesting incidents which transpiredduring the work of Branch 4, was the purchase of $50,000.00worth of sheet music for the use of the bands overseas. Thiswas the largest single purchase of this class of music that theworld has ever known. When the call was received from overseas, it contained therequest that the shipment should be made promptly. Thetask, however, was one of great difficulty, even if the needof hurried action had not been included. The music wasintended for distribution to the bands of the A. E. F. Thesenumbered about 390. It was accordingly decided to arrangefor the purchase of 400 complete sets, each set to comprise acopy of each number selected. After careful thought, it was deemed desirable to
