ts, these inspectors being under the control of theDepot Quartermasters (later known as Zone Supply Officers).These reports were rendered weekly on each contract placed bythe Division, and were compiled in the Records Section of theBranch, in order to ascertain what action was necessary to keepthe deliveries of all contracts up to schedule. Each Section of the Branch had attached to it severalofficers and civilians who were experts in the manufacture ofthe lines of material handled, whose duties were to act astraveling supervisors, some devoting their time to production,and others to the overseeing of inspection, their principal carebeing to see that material was standardized and by workingbetween the different Zones, endeavor to maintain an equalstandard of quality throughout the various sources of supply.The inspection force in the field was handled by the Hardwareand Metals Division, later called the General Supplies Division,in each of the Quartermaster Depots, and was selected by

The popular Personnel Section Branch Number Six 95 officers in charge of this Division at Washington. Theinspectors work was checked by officers acting as travelingsupervisors from the different depots. In addition to this acertain per cent, of the material was inspected in the depotitself. In order to obv.ate some of the necessary delay betweenthe verbal agreement and the actual receipt of the signedcontract by the contractor and the Depot Quartermaster, whoalso had copies of all contracts placed in the Zone under hisjurisdiction, a copy of the letter of recommendation and awardwas immediately mailed to the depot by this Branch, thusenabling the Depot Quartermaster to immediately get intouch with the contractor and see that his work was startedon time, and that the specifications were lived up to. Alldelinquent contracts were handled in their respective sections,and they in turn made every effort through the depot to getthem up to schedule; and when necessary personal visits weremade
