Discussion about color profiles[edit]

Below is the continuation of this discussion from the main page

If you system can correctly display sRGB images but not Adobe RGB ones, then you have confirmed there’s something wrong with it. It’s up to you to try to learn from this or to ignore it. If you choose the former, happy to set some time aside to help you gain a better understanding of how colour spaces work. —-Julesvernex2 (talk) 11:22, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your offer, but first, I think I know how to use my system to display all kinds of color profiles, secondly, if by accident you were right (oh, let's admit my system is wrong), then let me tell you that everyone has the same problem, perhaps even worse, since I'm probably more skilled than the average, due to engineering background in the field of Technology, and my computer is not the worst machine either.
Now my subjective opinion on this subject (totally personal, no one is forced to follow me): Pictures with a sRGB color profile have more chances to be displayed well with a realistic appearance. And on the contrary, PhotoPro, AdobeRGB or other ICC profiles are risky. By the way, I think I also repeat what was said before by others. AdobeRGB is preferred for printing. The web is not the ideal environment for AdobeRGB. NEVERTHELESS, all different color profiles are welcome on Commons (especially when properly categorized), like various image formats including TIFF, PNG, GIF, PDF, etc. At FPC, sRGB is very adapted. No one wants to waste a lot of time by changing the configuration of a personal system, just to be able to evaluate an image that is supposed to be more widespread on web browsers than on glossy posters. -- Basile Morin (talk) 12:27, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It’s certainly your prerogative to have that understanding, take care now. Julesvernex2 (talk) 13:21, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

“To triumph without an accurate understanding of the situation is disastrous; it can mean defeat.” (Carl von Clausewitz) Basile, your result: “Very clearly different colors displayed on Chrome and Photoshop when the file is AdobeRGB, and exactly the same colors displayed on Chrome and Photoshop when the file is sRGB” just means exactly what Julesvernex2 suspected: at least one of these two applications is misconfigured. And this has nothing to do especially with AdobeRGB, it applies to all colour spaces. If both applications are configured well, every photo with any colour profile would be displayed exactly the same way by both applications. The fact that only sRGB works well on your machine just means that the misconfiguration does not have an affect on sRGB files. The easiest explanation for this would be that one of the applications ignores colour profiles completely and treats every RGB file as sRGB; naturally this setting does not change the appearance of sRGB files, but all files with any other RGB colour space. What do you mean by “My Photoshop is properly calibrated sRGB”? This may very well be the reason for all the confusion. You can configure Photoshop to your pleasure when you edit only your own files; but if you want to view and assess other people’s files, Photoshop must not be “calibrated sRGB”, but set up to respect embedded colour profiles and to display every file with the embedded profile. You are, of course, right, that it it not worth to discuss this further. It’s your turn to check your configuration. Hint: If you just reset Photoshop to the proper default configuration, everything may work fine. Or you can take a look in some good book about Photoshop; I can recommend e.g. Martin Evening, Adobe Photoshop 2020 for Photographers: A Professional Image Editor’s Guide, Routledge, ISBN 978-0367346836, still valid for Photoshop 2023. --Aristeas (talk) 17:35, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  2. To review a picture at FPC, I don't use Photoshop, but my web browser.
  3. As written above: "I know how to use my system" to display all kinds of color profiles (AdobeRGB included, in Photoshop included). Just three clicks. And save dollars.
  4. Certainly none of us want to change their color settings or buy new softwares to evaluate simple images. Trust the web browsers, and if the colors appear strange => bad luck. Whatever the well-intentioned goal of the nominator, "that's not our problem" others will say
  5. It has been shown through this nomination not too far ago (2018) that a picture with ProPhoto ICC produced noise and artifacts on the monitors of several of us. In the history of the file, the photographer tried to correct it, first by uploading an AdobeRGB version, but then finally succeeded only in sRGB.
  6. All my votes are 100% subjective and 100% unique in the mass. Everybody is perfectly entitled to share different opinions (I enjoy reading them) => just cast your own votes and write your proper reviews, develop if you need. This current nomination has been withdrawn already.
