  • In German the expression is "Unterfeuer" in contrary to "Oberfeuer", used for direction finding, not to indicate the boundary of the fairway. They belong to the so-called "Richtfeuer" (in German). A description of the function of "Oberfeuer" and "Unterfeuer" can be found in the German Wikipedia. As you can see in the article, the colour is irrelevant. The link there to the English Wikipedia leads to "leading lights" (therefore I used this expression), but possibly "leading lights" has a different meaning than "Oberfeuer" und "Unterfeuer". I'm not a native English speaker to judge. Meanwhile I found an article in the english Wikipedia about "Navigational aids" and I think, this expression fits better. (I removed the "Port of Bremerhaven" from the scope again). --Llez (talk) 16:24, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I checked this image on Google maps. It is located in shallow water to the port side (relative to an incoming vessel) of what appears to be a navigable channel into Bremerhaven. If one zooms in to the map, it shows corresponding lights on the starboard side. If you zoom out, you can see the context in which the lights are used. • Sorry, as you can see in google maps, the Unterfeuer Imsum is located exactly here the corresponding Oberfeuer Imsum is not on the starbord side but here, southeast of the unterfeuer on land! It is a direction finding aid, not a marking of the fairway. There is no fairway between the "Unterfeuer" and the "Oberfeuer". The context is in these two lights, not in other lighthouses on the starbord side.
I don't understand the whole discussion. This is the "Unterfeuer Imsum" and I nominated it in the scope "Unterfeuer Imsum". I would understand the discussion if the scope was wrong. Here the function of a front light is primarily irrelevant. When I nominate a castle, I also don't have to discuss which outbuildings of the castle are connected to and what their function is. The only question here is: Are the VI criteria met or not? I think they do (PS: For the function of "Oberfeuer" and "Unterfeuer" see the explanation here). --Llez (talk) 06:30, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
German road sign
  •  Comment 100% the colour is important. I am a qualified ocean skipper trained in navigation. Red and green could never mean the same. Port (or its equivalent in German) is essential for the scope. Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:52, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Does this image deserve its own category? It is an ordinary "German-style" navigation aid and as such should by in Category:Navigational aids (maritime navigation) or one of its sub-directories. By putting it in its own category, you are not doing the user any favours, especially if all they want is a typical German "Unterfeuer" type navigational aid.In this respect it is no different to the road sign depicted on the right.
