Reason The best picture we have of Leo Tolstoy. -- Yann (talk)
Review
(criteria)

 Comment I hesitated with this painting, but I think this image is better because it is a photograph rather than a painting. Yann (talk) 16:28, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

* Oppose Not geocoded. -- Rastaman3000 (talk) 15:58, 20 June 2009 (UTC) OK -- Rastaman3000 (talk) 16:41, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment Will you nominate this portrait once fully restored? It could be an alternative image. --Myrabella (talk) 20:13, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Well, it could be an alternative if it were restored, but it is not, and that restoration is not in my plan in the near future, and may be not in my capabilities. Yann (talk) 23:58, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The nominated image is probably not the best close-up portrait of Tolstoy to be found in Commons but it is of historical and cultural interest (the writer, the place, the technique...). I would have supported if its colors (and grain) hadn't been altered since the first upload. It is a matter of importance for an image claimed to be "the first color photo portrait in Russia" (follow the external link given in the description for a reference). --Myrabella (talk) 11:09, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    •  Comment We need to be judging it on the scope "Leo Tolstoy", so to me the other aspects of the image (eg historical significance) are only significant if there is nothing else to differenciate this image from other portraits of him. Is this the best representation of Leo? --Tony Wills (talk) 21:58, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      •  Comment Under this aspect, this portrait—a photo too—gives a better idea of what Leo Tolstoy looked like. (But the original photo used for the nominated image was taken at Yasnaya Polyana, a very important place in Tolstoy's life). --Myrabella (talk) 08:43, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
        • Yes, this portrait is quite good, but 1. It needs restoration, which is beyond my capabilities, 2. We don't know the photographer, the date and the place, so it can't be geocoded, which makes this color portrait slightly more suited. Yann (talk) 09:42, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support See the discussion above. --Myrabella (talk) 07:50, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Sorry, I don't think this is the best picture of Tolstoy at all. It is an early colour photograph, and may be valuable in another scope, but there are far better pictures of Tolstoy eg File:Leo_Tolstoy01.jpg (a bit dark but very good detail compared to other versions of same painting) and File:Count Tolstoy, with hat.jpg. --Tony Wills (talk) 13:14, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • The quality is not the only important criteria: I think that it is as much as important to know the exact place and date, and I think that a photograph is better suited than a painting. Yann (talk) 13:33, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Quality wasn't my prime interest. For this scope I want the best representation of Leo. A good painting can be better than a photograph. I am not sure why exact place and time is important to you for a portrait? --Tony Wills (talk) 21:23, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
