I first came to Commons a couple of years ago, but have only recently become active. I came here to work on the Commons:CJK stroke order project. Since started years ago, that project has grown in scope and size. When the original team was disbanded numerous issues were left unsolved and need addressing. The project isn't as accessible as it could be and I would like to contribute in that field.

This will take me into editing protected templates, deleting pages and possibly some material to clean up. I am aware of the issues of availability of material for sister-projects and other users. I would strive to increase users' accessibility to media and preserve backwards compatibility. I have been most active on Wikibooks recently and am an administrator there. Thanks for taking the time to review my request. Seeing that there is little chance of support for it, I'm withdrawing my request for admin. --Swift (talk) 02:33, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How do you intend to address the issues around accessability? Do these require adminship? ++Lar: t/c 18:55, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm primarily interested in the Commons:CJK stroke order project. I found it when looking for material for the b:Japanese wikibook. The structure of the project was unclear and it was very difficult to figure out what, exactly, was available and what the status was.
Most of these issues don't require adminship and I've so far been recategorising and rewriting the few of the pages. The first admin task I faced was with {{SOlicense}}, a protected template that I wanted to update. I contacted the admin who protected for help (which was minimal, I'd written a usage sub-page that simply needed transclusion). He has yet to do so or even reply to my message. By the way; if anyone here with the proper tools would be so kind to take care of this, that would be much appreciated.
Most of the work doesn't require admin tools. While I know some very helpful administrators such as User:Mike.lifeguard and Herby, User:Gmaxwell, User:Multichill and the relative silence on Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#User:Multichill give me the impression that requests for help aren't given a high priority. Upcoming tasks are a re-think of how we organise the stroke order images in a way that we're not providing the incorrect stroke order for one school of writing (e.g. Japanese) by providing an incorrenct fall-back (e.g. traditional Chinese). Where this will take us, I'm not sure. Those interested are encouraged to pitch in. --Swift (talk) 04:35, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Hi Swift - as someone I've known from other places (& trust) it is good to see you active here again. However going back a couple of hundred contributions takes me to 2006 - I fully accept you are active now but for me I'd like to see it sustained for a while maybe before an RfA. Hope you do stick around here for a while. --Herby talk thyme 19:53, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm afraid I concur. While it's great to see you around now, that hasn't been the case for very long (here or on Wikibooks). I would want to see a more consistent activity level with respect to Commons administrative areas than I can see currently. I'm interested in your thoughts on accessibility though, and I hope we can work together on some of that in the future.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 23:46, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't been active on Commons administrative areas and don't intend to be. I'm looking to work on my little, neglected corner. As noted above, I don't really need these rights (nor did I need them when I was nominated on Wikibooks). I wouldn't use them much, but they'd make things easier as I wouldn't have to go fishing for admins who'd be interested in helping. If anyone is willing to offer to be the project admin, I'd be grateful and happy to withdraw this nomination.
I'm not sure what the sustained activity is supposed to mean (more than this, I presume). My activity will rise and dwindle depending on my work on Wikibooks as well other commitments. I'm certainly doing a lot of work right now and cannot promise to sustain that activity. I do intend to see this project through. --Swift (talk) 04:35, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I had reviewed your RFA there. Need for the tools is one of the requirements in my mind. If you are not going to be involved in administrative activities, I see little need to consider this further. You'll likely have no trouble finding admins to take action when required.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 23:28, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    I certainly hope so. --Swift (talk) 02:33, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
