Commons:Requests and votes/Forrester

Support = 38;  Oppose = 5;  Neutral = 1 - 88% Successful, Forrester is now a Commons sysop. There was some opposition over his involvement in the DUP project at DeWP, but there was also support for those same actions. I thus conclude that the good faith and legitimate lack of agreement between DeWP users as to the merits of the DUP did not result in a lack of consensus to promote the user here. The votes of confidence from a significant number of regular Commons users lead me to believe that the community wishes to promote Forrester, and I have done accordingly. I believe that this consensus would exist with or without my prior particiption in this RfA and that this has had no impact on my close. —Giggy 11:05, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! :) I started to be a Commons member in Feb 2006 but was rather inactive until several months ago. My main areas of work on German Wikipedia are media files and copyright issues. I have founded (and am still active there) a project called Dateiüberprüfung which became responsible for at least 90 % of the copyright issues (e.g. deletion requests) for files at German Wikipedia. This project achieved a huge number of permissions and saved many files. (cf. my User page for more information) I am quite familiar with copyright questions like licenses, permissions, FOP, derivative works… not only on German copyright law. But I understand the goal of Wikimedia Commons and it’s guidelines so that I accept of course that e.g. there must be a different policy to the threshold of originality at commons. Until today most of the things I did at commons were deletion requests and till now there was no decision of a commons admin “against” my “vote” ;). With admin-access I would mostly care about copyright issues and try to help Wikimedia commons this way.

If you got any questions: Feel free to ask me (email, my discussion page and I am often online at #wikimedia-commons)! I like direct and open discussions and constructive criticism. :) ...Forrester 23:29, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some words about "DÜP": "DÜP" (short for Dateiüberprüfungfile checking) is a relative new system in German Wikipedia to control the images and misc. files and to find copyright violations. The aim is to rescue as much files as possible (by gathering approvals). If someone finds a problematic file he can mark this file with a special tag. A specialty is that you can put different parameters into the tag to define the problem (e. g. Lizenz if the license tag is missing or something other with the license is wrong). Than the files are getting sorted into daily categories and the uploader is informed automatically by a bot. The uploader has now 14 days to solve the problem(s). After these 14 days, some users who participate the project look after the files. When this fails surely the files must nevertheless be deleted. This system replaced the deletion requests and is much more effective. It´s not perfect but better than the old system. Chaddy (talk) 12:37, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, the context is appreciated. —Giggy 15:27, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm totally confused as to why this is a "bad thing". The "DUP" system sounds much like our current system. Did he break this or something on de.wp? --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 16:16, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He founded the system and is still one of the most active project members. He mainly administrates the system but he didn´t break anything (I´m also a bit confused, what did you mean with your question?). Ok, it´s his "fault" that we don´t have any deletion requests for images anymore on de-WP - files which can´t be rescued are speedy deleted afters the two weeks (and that´s one of the main differents to the Commons system - the files are not requested for deletion but for checking and rescue). ;) Chaddy (talk) 16:42, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I'm just confused as to why this is a "Bad Thing"? That is why I'm trying to get at here. Forrester built this system on de.wp - Ok, Cool. It is fairly similar to our own and I don't see any overt problems with it. Maybe this is something only abf can answer, but why does this show that he's not "Admin quality" ? --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 17:17, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The System is not made, but used for unclear situations, which results is users getting insulted to do copyvios, because they explaned the image to less... --TheK (talk) 20:42, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To clear unclear situations there is a special page where these problems are discussed. However I don´t really know what you mean, could you please give me a link to an example? Chaddy (talk) 22:21, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Some words

I want to thank everyone for your trust in my abilities and will try to better the expectations of the ones who voted for me and to rebut the expectations of the ones who voted against me. I will do my very best to help Wikimedia Commons. But most of all I want to assure that I am open for criticism and self-reflexion and that you are free to write me if you see me doing something wrong. Thanks for your trust. Btw: In the next weeks I won't have much time so that you don't need to fear me ;) Forrester [[ hate+love letters ]] 12:29, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
