Categories by name

Hi, XRay. I noticed that you added a metacat template to a number of "by name" categories. Most of the ones I saw were not actually metacats, so I have changed them to {{CatCat}}.

An example is Category:Writers from Ternopil Oblast by name. This is not a metacat because each subcategory is for only one person. If this were a metacat, each subcategory would be for multiple people with the same name. An example of a "by name" category that is a metacat is Category:Churches in Illinois by name, because each subcat is for any church with the indicated name (see, for example, Category:Grace churches in Illinois, which includes multiple churches with that name).

On a related note, many of the categories you recently put {{CatCat}} on are actually metacats and need the metacat template instead. I haven't looked at each one, but probably all the ones that aren't "by name" are actually metacats. I had changed the algorithm that is necessary for the division and, above all, restricted it much more. To do this, I analyzed where CatCat and MetaCat are set. When in doubt, I opted for CatCat rather than MetaCat, especially if there was no clear basis for the decision - as was the case with "by name". In my opinion, CatCat is better than nothing, even if MetaCat would be right. --XRay 💬 17:51, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

I need an algorithm for the categories. It's made by a script, not manually. The way you explained it to me, there is no single way. I have defined a set of prefixes and a set of suffixes for MetaCat and CatCat respectively. If there are categories with one and the same prefix and suffix that use either MetaCat or CatCat, this is not a distinguishing criterion. I need a clear differentiation criterion for the algorithm. I have now removed the "by name" categories and set neither the one nor the other template there. --XRay 💬 11:53, 13 July 2024 (UTC)

If I give you a list of criteria that you can put metacat on, would you do that? Here is such a list, based on ones I saw you do today plus a few others:

• architect, arrondissement, autonomous community, borough, century, city, country, country subdivision, county, decade, department, district, gender, genre, location, municipality, operator, patron saint, populated place, prefecture, province, province or territory, region, state, state or territory, town, village

I have rarely seen those used in a way that would not be a metacat, but all such uses I've seen were named incorrectly.

Here are some that are usually not metacats:

• IATA code, French/German/Italian/Latin/modern name, registration number, serial number, title

Here are some that might or might not be metacats, depending on the content:

• name

I'm sure there are others for each of those lists.

Also please note: if the category name says "uncategorized by" (such as Category:Buildings in Tehran uncategorized by street), it shouldn't need either catcat or metacat.

I don't know where you got those lists, but a lot of the ones you show for CatCat should definitely be for MetaCat.

Easy. Just this list and a query with Category: intitle:/ by / hastemplate:"MetaCat" (as an example for MetaCat). The query is done by a script, so the result is a simple text file. Just a little bit with search and replace and you've got the result. --XRay 💬 15:12, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Ah. That list is not a complete list of metacat options. (It says right at the top that it's believed to be inactive.) It never included all possible metacat options anyway, and probably can't because new ones can be created at any time. I would say that most things on it would always indicate a metacat, but 1) some of them would never do so and 2) some would be used for metacats sometimes and non-metacats at other times. Examples:

• ICAO code -- wouldn't be a metacat because there's a one-to-one relationship between airports and the code
• IMO number -- wouldn't be a metacat because there's a one-to-one relationship between ships and the number (When you see two different ships under the same IMO number, it's because the ship was renamed during its lifetime.)
• Name -- sometimes a metacat, sometimes not; depends on what's in the category
• Serial number -- probably never indicates a metacat
• Title -- also would probably never be a metacat

Recent changes

• At the Wikimedia Foundation a new task force was formed to replace the disabled Graph with more secure, easy to use, and extensible Chart. You can subscribe to the newsletter to get notified about new project updates and other news about Chart.
• The CampaignEvents extension is now available on Meta-wiki, Igbo Wikipedia, and Swahili Wikipedia, and can be requested on your wiki. This extension helps in managing and making events more visible, giving Event organizers the ability to use tools like the Event registration tool. To learn more about the deployment status and how to request this extension for your wiki, visit the CampaignEvents page on Meta-wiki.
• Editors using the iOS Wikipedia app who have more than 50 edits can now use the Add an Image feature. This feature presents opportunities for small but useful contributions to Wikipedia.
• Thank you to all of the authors who have contributed to MediaWiki Core. As a result of these contributions, the percentage of authors contributing more than 5 patches has increased by 25% since last year, which helps ensure the sustainability of the platform for the Wikimedia projects.

Problems

• A problem with the color of the talkpage tabs always showing as blue, even for non-existent pages which should have been red, affecting the Vector 2022 skin, has been fixed.

Future changes

• The Trust and Safety Product team wants to introduce temporary accounts with as little disruption to tools and workflows as possible. Volunteer developers, including gadget and user-script maintainers, are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle temporary accounts. Bis zum 19. Juni 2024 kannst du die hochgeladenen Fotos im Vorjurytool bewerten. Vom 2. bis zum 4. August 2024 kürt dann die Jury die Siegerbilder, vielleicht ist eins deiner Bilder dabei.

Recent changes

• Wikimedia developers can now officially continue to use both Gerrit and GitLab, due to a June 24 decision by the Wikimedia Foundation to support software development on both platforms. Gerrit and GitLab are both code repositories used by developers to write, review, and deploy the software code that supports the MediaWiki software that the wiki projects are built on, as well as the tools used by editors to create and improve content. This decision will safeguard the productivity of our developers and prevent problems in code review from affecting our users. More details are available in the Migration status page.
• The Wikimedia Foundation seeks applicants for the Product and Technology Advisory Council (PTAC). This group will bring technical contributors and Wikimedia Foundation together to co-define a more resilient, future-proof technological platform. • Editors with rollback user-rights who use the Wikipedia App for Android can use the new Edit Patrol features. These features include a new feed of Recent Changes, related links such as Undo and Rollback, and the ability to create and save a personal library of user talk messages to use while patrolling. If your wiki wants to make these features available to users who do not have rollback rights but have reached a certain edit threshold, you can contact the team. • Editors who have access to The Wikipedia Library can once again use non-open access content in SpringerLinks, after the Foundation contacted them to restore access. You can read more about this and 21 other community-submitted tasks that were completed last week.

Changes later this week

• This week, dark mode will be available on a number of Wikipedias, both desktop and mobile, for logged-in and logged-out users. Interface admins and user script maintainers are encouraged to check gadgets and user scripts in the dark mode, to find any hard-coded colors and fix them. There are some recommendations for dark mode compatibility to help.

• Next week, functionaries, volunteers maintaining tools, and software development teams are invited to test the temporary accounts feature on testwiki. Temporary accounts is a feature that will help improve privacy on the wikis. No further temporary account deployments are scheduled yet. • Editors who upload files cross-wiki, or teach other people how to do so, may wish to join a Wikimedia Commons discussion. The Commons community is discussing limiting who can upload files through the cross-wiki upload/Upload dialog feature to users auto-confirmed on Wikimedia Commons. Just a note, an initial lowercase letter in a template is not a redirect -- it is treated the same as capitalized by the software. See en:WP:NCLOWERCASEFIRST. Hallo Dietmar, zur Kenntnisname: Mit Pinales in North Rhine-Westphalia in September 2021 habe ich angefangen nun auch Nadelbäume (Pinales) nach Monat / Jahr zu verkategorisieren (die meisten Bilder in Trees in North Rhine-Westphalia in September 2021 waren Kiefern in der Westruper Heide - um genau zu sein Pinus sylvestris, weswegen die Bilder auch noch in Pinus sylvestris in North Rhine-Westphalia einsortiert werden könnten, was ich jetzt noch nicht gemacht habe).
