Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:29, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Loosing Weight
[edit]Assuming both

Since I look more like the "before" picture myself I would very much like to know how you became like the "after" picture. Just the regular "eat less and exercise more"?

Inguinal hernia image
[edit]Thank you for donating your image of an inguinal hernia. Am writing to ask for clarification: the description of the image states that the hernia is on the left, but the small black arrow on the image is on the viewer's right hand side. Is the arrow actually pointing at the hernia? If so, is the left/right confusion just one of semantics? I would be grateful if you could clarify. Thank you! KDS444 (talk) 01:39, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- It is on the persons left, which means the right side of the image. The arrow is pointing to the hernia. The image is that of looking straight at a person in front of you. James Heilman, MD (talk) 01:52, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- NOW I understand better! How would you feel about replacing the existing image with this one? (for the sake of us lay people who do not know how to easily spot black arrows on x-rays).
- Sure feel free. James Heilman, MD (talk) 07:11, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Appropriately Licensed
[edit]You participated at the earlier discussion on licence choice for Featured Pictures. A number of users felt that such restrictions should be made at policy level. Please comment at Commons:Requests for comment/AppropriatelyLicensed. This is a proposal to amend this licence policy to disallow future uploads where the sole licence is inappropriate for the media (e.g., GFDL for images). In earlier discussions there were a number of comments that, while reasonable opinions, did not align with Wikimedia's mission for free content. Please read the FAQ before commenting. Thanks -- Colin (talk) 22:55, 15 June 2013 (UTC)
Re: Graph
[edit]I like that graph a lot too. I did not create it though. I looked around a bit and could not find later stats. See the description part of the graph page. This is part of what is there currently, and it is what I have found so far:
Separate columns are needed for monthly edit totals for registered users, anonymous users, and bots. This link goes to the section concerning anonymous contributors. It states: "No detailed statistics for anonymous users are available for this wiki (performance reasons). All together 109,370,998 article edits were made by anonymous users, out of a total of 366,162,033 article edits (30%)" That is what it said on June 30, 2013. [edit]James, I mentioned you here.
Query1: File:Rhinopyma.JPG has got the black bands you know I hate so much. The file description says you got consent. If you have consent, why are the black bands required -- is it just a courtesy to provide a small degree of anonymity? Or did the patient agree to their use?
- Yes have signed consent and the person in question agreed to it use under a CC BY SA license. It is as a courtesy. James Heilman, MD (talk) 04:11, 28 July 2013 (UTC)

Angioedema
[edit]Dear Dr. Heilman,
Thank you for your many photos. I am particularly interested in your picture labeled "File:Angioedema2010.JPG"
I am making a video trying to explain allergies and showing reactions so that people can recognize the signs and symptoms. Would you give me permission to use your photo? I would be happy to list you in the credits at the end of the video if you would like.
I am asking permission specifically to:
1. verify that you were the creator of the image and therefore have all rights to grant permission use
2. ask if the subject (or subject's family) of the photo would give permission for my use of the image (I see that all your patients gave permission for Wikimedia Commons usage; I am not clear if they also gave permission for other uses).
2. ask that I be released from the "share alike" condition that you stated on your Wikimedia Commons licensing. I am putting a great amount of work into an accurate video that can be a helpful tool and I don't want people taking excerpts of my finished video and sharing, remixing, and adapting freely, especially without being able to verify that the information remains medically correct. (My daughter is an allergy patient at Johns Hopkins University Hospital and I have shown a draft of my video to Dr. Robert Wood and he was in full support of the information contained and the presentation method.)
Thank you for your time and consideration. I am very grateful for your commitment to education and information sharing and hope that you will consider letting me use your image. I'm new to doing Wikimedia Commons requests so I hope I am following the proper procedure and etiquette.
Sincerely, Anne
- Yes I am the creator of this image. And yes I have sign consent for the release of this image under a CC BY SA license. Please email me by the button on the side and we can discuss further. James Heilman, MD (talk) 22:25, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Dear Dr. Heilman, Thank you for your prompt reply. I truly appreciate your kindness. I did not see a button but I think I figured out how to email you per your request. Thank you again for considering sharing your image. I truly appreciate it. Sincerely, Anne Anne b design (talk) 02:22, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
Attribution of image
[edit]Dear Sir,
I would like to use your images of Aedes aegypti mosquito, available at "https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AAedes_aegypti_feeding.jpg", in an extension-outreach publication related to pests in community environments. This publication is purely for educational purposes and has no commercial interests whatsoever.
However, the suggested attribution formats, "By Muhammad Mahdi Karim (www.micro2macro.net) Facebook (Own work) [GFDL 1.2 (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/fdl-1.2.html)], via Wikimedia Commons" is very different from the style I will be following for other pictures in my publication, which will most likely be much shorter and in the format:
"Photo by Abc Defghijk", or "Photo by Abc Defghijk, Lmnopqr.org".
Therefore for the sake of consistency, kindly let me know whether I may cite the images in the above formats, and if so, what name/affiliation should I use.
Thank you! Sincerely, Shaku

Bell's Palsy Book
[edit]Hello Dr James,
I would like to use your Bell's palsy photo in my upcoming Bell's Palsy Book.
Can you please tell me if this is ok and if so what are the requirments
Thanks
- You need to attribute myself an Wikipedia and technically you need to release the book under the same license. James Heilman, MD (talk) 14:26, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- The above is not accurate
- There is no legal requirement to attribute Wikipedia (or Wikimedia) as they are neither the author nor owner of the image and so cannot be claimed to be such. However you should say where you got the image from (which is Wikimedia Commons), ideally with a URL to the image page.
- There is absolutely no requirement to release your book under the same licence: your book can be "All rights reserved" or released under a completely different licence. Lots of commercial books legally make use of CreativeCommons-liensed images.
- You must attribute James Heilman MD as creator of the image, ideally with a link or URL to the author's page (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Doc_James)
- You must choose which of the two licences (CC BY-SA 3.0, or GFDL 1.2) you are taking advantage of when publishing the image. This is an easy choice as GFDL 1.2 is really only a licence for software manuals and Wikipedia, and quite impractical for a book.
- You must document which licence the image is used under. This is particularly necessary for "share-alike" licences like CC BY-SA because people must know they are free to copy the image from your book and use that copy under the same licence terms. So if you pick CC BY-SA 3.0, then you are required to say that the image in your book is "licensed CC BY-SA 3.0". Ideally, you should spell out the full name and URL of the licence (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)
- It is good practice to say which website you got the image from (Wikimedia Commons) and provide a link back to the author's user page (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Doc_James).
- The above is not accurate
- So an example credit would be
- 'Bells palsy' by James Heilman MD from Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bellspalsy.JPG) under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0).
- In an online book or hyperlinked PDF, this can be condensed:
- 'Bells palsy' by James Heilman MD from Wikimedia Commons under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license.
- -- Colin (talk) 19:00, 28 October 2014 (UTC) (unwatching now, James)
- Thanks Colin. James Heilman, MD (talk) 20:12, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

Patient consent form
[edit]Hi Doc,
I'd like to contribute some photos of children with an autism-related disorder to wikimedia, and heard you'd be a good person to ask about subject consent (from discussion at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Help_desk#Obtaining_consent_to_post_photos_of_children_with_special_needs).
Do you have a standard letter/form that you use to ask patients for consent to upload your images? If so, could you send a copy to me (peter@yellowdogphoto.com), so we may adapt it for our purposes?
Best wishes
