Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Overwriting image with substantially different content

[edit]

Hello! I noticed that you replaced File:Signal Blue Icon.png with an entirely different image from a different source. According to COM:OVERWRITE, existing files should not be overwritten with substantially different content. I have therefore reverted your upload. You are welcome to upload the new image as a separate file. --Dodi 8238 (talk) 18:09, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have now uploaded an improved version of the new icon here: File:Signal ultramarine icon.png. --Dodi 8238 (talk) 18:21, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Dodi 8238: , thanks for helping out. I wasn't sure how to handle this. My guess was that it was the safest thing to overwrite the old logo, so that if someone searches Commons with the keyword "Signal" he will not be presented the old one. Anyways, if a new file is the better solution I will keep that in mind for next time. Tischbeinahe (talk) 20:30, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for understanding. One potential problem with overwriting files is that some project may still want to use the original file, for example when writing about Signal's history. This is what I have done in en:Signal (software)#History. Replacing the file in File:Signal Blue Icon.png would mess things up in that section. It's better to go through the list of pages that currently use File:Signal Blue Icon.png and manually replace each instance with the new File:Signal ultramarine icon.png where it is appropriate. --Dodi 8238 (talk) 21:00, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
