BSicons
[edit]Hi BT14, congratulations with you first BSicon! However, I would like to note a couple of points.
The first thing I would strongly recommend you: do not use Inkscape, Corel Draw or any other program dedicated to editing complex SVGs! Even if properly employed to create true svgs, these applications introduce a lot of excessive code that only eats space (and increases server load). BSicons by their nature are very simple images, and all parts of them can be easily described using XML syntax. To edit and create such files, it is enough to use the most simple text editors, such as Notepad, Notepad++, KWrite, Wordpad etc. You can try opening File:BSicon exvCONTg.svg in such an editor, and you'll see quite a simple code that can be modified without much knowledge of XML. The result can be previewed, for example, in Google Chrome or in Internet Explorer 10. Most BSicons can be kept under 1KB in size. Also, they must be exactly 500×500px in dimension.
Please do not forget to add categories when uploading files. All BSicons are currently located in some subcategory of Category:Icons for railway descriptions; otherwise one would be able to find them only by chance. I've stumbled upon quite relevant icons in most unexpected places, like Category:Green discs, Category:BHF-Bank-Hochhaus or Category:Geography of North Yorkshire. Always such a surprise...
Oh, and one more thing. It was agreed (at Talk:BSicon) that BSicons are most appropriately licensed with {{PD-shape}}.
Don't let these comments discourage you! YLSS (talk) 22:56, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
- Not at all, I was sure there would be some housekeeping. Interesting you mentioned using raw code for the creation of SVG files. I was using OpenOffice and I haven't been too happy with the UI on it so I'd be happy to try using different methods to get the files created. Hopefully I'll find one that's easier. Copyright status: File:BSicon evCONTf.svg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:BSicon evCONTf.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
