My grandfather Harold "Bud" Schierbecker served in Korea where he was attached to the Sixth Tank Battalion as a dentist. China entered the war on October 25, 1950. On that day he was in Unsan when the 6th Tank Battalion ran into the 30,000-man Chinese People's Volunteer Army 39th Corps. Somehow or another he became separated. He led 30 men back to friendly lines 10 days later, scavenging kimchi along the way. He later found out he had been reported MIA. He was awarded a Bronze Star.

The greatest nation on the face of the earth had committed its youth to battle, under-strength, under-trained, ill-equipped, and ill-supplied. —Jack Walker, Brief Account of the Korean War
