33 Eagle (Thor Storm read/attack Defense)

American Football Defense Formations

The Thor-Storm defense is an attack defense based on a blend of the Bear, the 4-3 Base and the split/Tight 50 Eagle defense. This defense is intended to combat running offenses by confusing blocking schemes and drawing the attention of the key backfield personnel prior to the snap. Its secondary goal is to maximize upfield penetration to facilitate piles of offensive personnel clearing the way for “Color out of the hole” runthroughs by linebackers and other defensive personnel. Also critical, is the occupation of all front line offensive assets to free up personal for a True 7 Man pass defense enabling multiple blitz looks and replacement rushes(sending in LB or CB rushers and delayed drop coverages by lineman). The defense is meant to resemble a “Goth” like viking raid.

Confusion Confusion is facilitated by having 1 or 2 of the interior lineman(the core of the defense) standing up and roaming at the snap of the ball. It is also facilitated by having one of the lineman backed off of the line of scrimmage 1.5 yards to allow a delayed/read rush/penetration.

Penetration Penetration is facilitated by having interior lineman standing up, gaining momentum at the time of the snap. Much like Blitzing linebackers. Penetration is also facilitated by having lineman removed off of the ball in a linebacker posture, reading the offensive line and other penetrating lineman before making an attempt to engage or penetrate.

Fundamentals: Linemen:”skin” into to upfield gap penetration(Feint headup penetration but slide into gap on snap). If no penetration can be made, occupy as many lineman as possible and create a clump or pile. The goal for a lineman is the respective gap based on flow, 2 yards in the backfield using either the offensive linemans body or heroic penetration, keeping the flowside lineman occupied(preventing being passed off to the backside lineman on a combo block if possible even if you have to tackle the front side lineman). If you do cut getoff, then heroic upfield penetration is the secondary goal. Insided LBs: at 5 yards Widened Triangle(Tackles to QB to Near Back, instead of Guards to QB to Near Back). Outside LBs: Base of 3 yards off the line (headup for weakside no tightend, headup for Tight-end). Can tighten this up at the discretion of the LB and play call or pre-snap read. Bench(short field) or Weakside Corner: Always guess Run. Overtop pass coverage will sink to make play on ball or tackle. Start off with pass but always release for run support or secondary contain. Bench Corner always goes into boundary (1st), weakside(2nd). Wideside or Strong Corner: Pass first, slow play the run, stretching it out for pursuit. General:With 6 or 7 men in coverage, pursuit is critical. This also means that aggressive up front play, taking on lineman and spilling every run outside for run support. Instead of focusing on the blockers, defenders attack inside out(near, inside hip) on the ball carrier, creating piles/clumps of offensive color. Linebackers/alley runners take aggressive run throughs.

Looks: Thor, Base: Responsibilities on weak flow into boundary

Thor, Base Reponsibilites on Tight Flow to field:

Thor, Center Pop Standup Rush(momentum lineman blitz)

Thor, double Pop

Thor, Weak Double Pop

Triple Pop (Also can call a “free style” for popping at will)

Pass coverage: Inside flush pressure and underneath man coverage to force passing game into littoral field gutters, (off the field crown). Man within a zone for all underneath coverages. 1/5 Safety robs dig poses as deep ¼ and must run with number 1 to weak side. ½ saftey disguise as LB or ¼. Bench Corner Sinks to 10 yards lose man/zone, passing off to 1/5 Saf(robber) and then to ½ Saf looking to release for secondary contain. Bench Side or Weak OLB drop to hook eyeing first back out for loose zone-man coverage looking to release for secondary contain. Strong/Field OLB Bump tight end looking for first Back out for man coverage, working to wide Curl-to flat to secondary contain. Inside LB drops to whole looking eyeing 2nd back or Tightends for man, then working to secondary contain.
