Background

[edit]

In 2012 Fæ joined a Wellcome workshop on images and as part of those discussions proposed that the non-commercial constraint on historical images in the Wellcome Image Library be dropped. In 2014 Fæ approached Wellcome Library staff with a proposal for a Wikimedia Commons release of all images in the newly re-licensed historical medical images. Eventually this resulted in a positive blog post about the project and approximately 100,000 images were released.

For the 2014 upload project details, refer to Commons:Batch uploading/Wellcome Images. This page is for ongoing decisions and updates.

Since release a number of images have been deleted from Commons, the most significant numbers were 1980s/90s AIDS educational posters where there was uncertainty about the release from the charities and public bodies that originally published them.

[edit]

Many of the uploaded images include a CC-BY-NC license statement in the EXIF data. At the time of upload the license displayed in the Library image catalogue was with a CC-BY-4.0 licence and the EXIF is considered a hangover.

Reference deletion requests

  1. 2016 Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_in_Category:AIDS_Poster_from_Wellcome_Images_(check_needed), kept but disputed
  2. 2018 Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Melanie_Klein_1952.jpg, kept, questioned due to link rot

Website changes

[edit]

In 2017/18 the original source website wellcomeimages.org was superseded by wellcomecollection.org. During the transition images are displayed without much metadata apart from a link to the main library catalogue. Unfortunately the transition appears to drop some images, such as this portrait of Melanie Klein. The previous releases on Wikimedia Commons have not been withdrawn or questioned by the Wellcome.

The new gallery links are added by Faebot by testing where the old gallery link is a redirect. This redirect includes an automatic search for the image reference. Where this matches, the first match is presumed valid, the linked wellcomecollection page is parsed, and this is used to create a new gallery link using the recommended displayed shortlink.

There are three acceptable outcomes from this maintenance task:

  1. The Wellcome Collection displayed license is verified as being CC-BY-4.0, i.e. this license is only ever displayed where the script finds the link on the wellcomecollection.org display page to the creativecommons website page for the specific license. Where the redirect shows no matching image, Category:Files from Wellcome Images missing from wellcomecollection.org is added. These new links are dated, providing the automated equivalent of a license review.
  2. Where images are found at the website with a CC-BY-NC license, these are added to Files hosted by Wellcome Collection as non-commercial use only and the link is added to the license page showing the problematic license. It may be that these files should be reviewed for deletion based on the Wellcome apparent change of status, though some may have already been kept after review due to being copyright ineligible or similar.
  3. Where images are on the Wellcome Collection website with no license, they are added to Files hosted by Wellcome Collection with no license statement.

Files missing from wellcomecollection.org should not be assumed to have a copyright problem. As a counterexample, Book of Receipts for Cookery and Pastry is clearly public domain but has not been carried over to the new site.
