Bennetts Travel has a rather attractive all-over purple livery.

English: Arriva Midlands North 2349 (S349 YOG), a Dennis Dart SLF/Plaxton Pointer 2 SPD, on the B5070 Church Street, Chirk (Welsh: Y Waun), Wrexham (county borough), Wales, stopped at the Church Street bus stop while heading for Oswestry on route 2A, covering for one of the newer route branded Darts or VDL/Wright Cadets that usually ply the route.

English: Arriva Midlands North 2993 (YJ09 MKG), an Optare Versa, turning right from High Street into Cross Street, Ellesmere, Shropshire, England, on route 449. The main daytime service on route 449 is run by Tanat Valley, with Arriva running an early morning and two late afternoon/early evening journeys. The first afternoon Arriva journey runs before the last Tanat Valley service, and I managed to photograph both. As seen here, Arriva were using a new Versa at the time, new in May 2009 so only a few months old when seen. In contrast, Tanat Valley were using a J-reg Leyland Lynx, File:Tanat Valley 268 J658 UHN.JPG.

This TrawsCambria route was run with a fleet of route branded Wright Commanders, as seen here (some buses have since been repainted into new livery, and lost the branding). In this photo, the bus is displaying "Barmouth" as the destination. It was alternating between this and "Abermaw", which is Welsh for Barmouth. Note the route branding here on the offside is in Welsh, it is displayed in English on the nearside of the bus.

From 1 September 2009, route 28 was cut to only operate between Guildford and Knaphill Sainsbury's, rather than continuing to Woking via Goldsworth Park and Horsell as it had done previously (except one school journey which continued to run as far as Horsell). Route 28 does not run on Sundays, so therefore the last day of the service running the full route was Saturday 29 August 2009. This photo was taken on the penultimate day of the old Woking - Guildford service. A last minute replacement was found in the form of route 97, which eventually ran from Woking to Knaphill Sainsbury's, covering where the 28 had been withdrawn from. However, as part of Phase 1 of Surrey County Council's Bus Review, route 28 was extended back to Woking from August 2010, as it had run before September 2009, this time with financial support from Surrey CC. This in turn enabled the withdrawal of route 97.

It sold its vehicle rental business to Northgate in 2006 for £129m, to focus on its primary UK bus and rail divisions. The car is a Ford Mondeo Mk II, and is seen parked in Kingsway, Woking.

The buses left the Transdev London fleet after new buses arrived there, and for a few months a good collection of these Dennis Dart SLF/Plaxton Pointer 2s built up at this site. Various buses and coaches from other sources also turned up to be stored. The Transdev Darts have all found new homes now. This space was once occupied by actual bus companies: Thames Bus set up here in the early 2000s, and were later acquired by an expanding Centra. Centra eventually sold the business to Flights Hallmark (part of Rotala) in 2005, the company being rebranded as Surrey Connect. In 2007, Rotala sold the business to focus on their other, larger, operations. The buyer was Wiltax, the other bus company that occupied this site, although Surrey Connect's main routes, the 426 and 446, transferred to Travel Surrey based down the road (and who ironically ran the 426 and 446 before Surrey Connect. By June 2007, Wiltax had been acquired by Tellings-Golden Miller, who gradually scaled down operations at the site (moving it slowly to their Heathrow depot, and with some Surrey bus routes transferring to other companies), until September 2008 when operations at the New Haw site finally stopped. There have been no public transport buses based at the site since, with this area now being used to store buses and by private hire coach companies.

After a year's gap, as part of Phase 1 of Surrey County Council's Bus Review, route 28 was extended back to Woking from August 2010, and the 97 withdrawn. The evening journeys were renumbered back to 28, though continued to take the routing introduced in September 2009, as it serves a wider area.

English: A note on the Horsell Residents Association (HRA) notice board on Horsell Green, off Horsell High Street, Horsell, Surrey. It regards bus route 28, which from 1 September 2009 was cut to only operate between Guildford and Knaphill Sainsbury's, rather than continuing to Woking via Goldsworth Park and Horsell as it had done previously. This left some areas of Horsell without a bus service, which worried the HRA. A last minute replacement was found in the form of route 97, which was introduced by Countryliner commercially, on a "use it or lose it" basis. To try and encourage people to use the service, the HRA promoted it. In the end, route 97 was revised in February 2010, being extended to Knaphill Sainsbury's (thus nearly fully covering the old 28 route - at first before the 97 had looped around somewhere else) and with Surrey CC funding, so it turned out not to be a use it or lose it basis! After a year's gap, as part of Phase 1 of Surrey County Council's Bus Review, route 28 was extended back to Woking from August 2010, and the 97 withdrawn.

As can be seen on the left of the photograph, construction works had caused one stop to be put out of use, with a temporary stop sited about 20 meters further along the road. It all seemed a bit pointless, and remained like it for a good few months, even managing to go through the bus stops being upgraded with new bus stop flags!

English: Arriva Guildford & West Surrey 3035 (N235 TPK), a Dennis Dart SLF/Plaxton Pointer, in Commercial Road, Guildford, Surrey, on route 21. As can be seen, the bus has been fitted with a new Plaxton Pointer 2 front, however the rest of the body is still the original Plaxton Pointer, as can be seen from this photograph of the back. It has only recently been done at the time. It is displaying "Cranleigh" on the blinds. The main service on route 21 runs from Guildford, through Chilworth and Shere, via Holmbury St Mary to Dorking and then onto Strood Green. However, one early evening journey runs from Holmbury St Mary to Forest Green and Cranleigh.

Arriva stopped running on route 4 from 23 May 2010, after Arriva and Safeguard came to agreement to stop joint operation of town routes, with each operator getting complete control of certain routes, and stopping running on others.

Two B7TLs, 6402 and 6403, arrived at Guildford at the end of August 2009, to displace the step entrance Dennis Dominators (5214 and 5215). 6403 is seen in its first week of service at Guildford here. While 6402 was almost immediately sent for repaint, 6403 had to wait for 6402 to go first, so photos of 6403 in service at Guildford in its original livery are more common than those of 6402. When the new double deckers first arrived, they weren't allowed on the usual double decker routes due to low trees (the Dominators they replaced had more substantial roofs than the ALX400s so could cope with hitting branches better), so were instead put on other routes, most often appearing on Guildford park and ride route 200. After a while the offending trees were seen to, and the double deckers took up their indented role, in particular school route 134. Because they are low floor, they are allowed the spend the day on the normal 34s and 35s, whereas previously, if possible (i.e. there were enough other vehicles available) the step entrance Dominators were taken out of service between school workings.

English: Arriva Guildford & West Surrey 4017 (GN58 BUA), an Alexander Dennis Enviro200 Dart, in Horsell High Street, Horsell, Surrey, passing the Crown pub on route 28. From 1 September 2009, route 28 was cut to only operate between Guildford and Knaphill Sainsbury's, rather than continuing to Woking via Goldsworth Park and Horsell as it had done previously. At the time there were four extra evening journeys, running from Woking to Horsell and back only, after the main Woking - Guildford service had finished, which utilised buses between duties on the evening service of route 91 (this meant that 91-branded Enviros were allocated to it, as seen here). These were operated under contract to Surrey County Council, so when the 28 was cut back from Woking by Arriva commercially, the four evening journeys were renumbered to 73 (the other route to serve Horsell and Woking). They continued to run from Woking via the route of service 28, but were amended to run back to Woking via the route of the 73, to provide a service to more of the area, as the route became one big loop. Route 28 does not run on Sundays, so therefore the last day of the service running the full route was Saturday 29 August 2009, when this photo was taken. It shows the first evening journey of the night, the 1932 from Woking. The same bus was scheduled to run all four evening journeys, so 4017 should have run them all (and been the last bus to depart Woking on a 28) if everything went as normal. The two buses used on the main daytime service were 3090 and 4021. After a year's gap, as part of Phase 1 of Surrey County Council's Bus Review, route 28 was extended back to Woking from August 2010. The evening journeys were renumbered back to 28 (though kept the same routing of going back to Woking via the 73 route) - so it turned out this wasn't the last evening of the 28 in Horsell after all.

English: A bus stop in Redding Way, Knaphill, Surrey, outside the Vyne Health Centre, which the bus stop is named after. It is seen on 29 August 2009. From 1 September 2009, route 28 was cut to only operate between Guildford and Knaphill Sainsbury's, rather than continuing to Woking via Goldsworth Park and Horsell as it had done previously. The affected bus stops were updated a couple of days early, and comparing this photo with File:Knaphill The Vyne Health Centre bus stop.JPG illustrates that the "e-plate" for the 28 on the bus stop flag had been blanked over, as the route no longer served this stop. However, after a year's gap, as part of Phase 1 of Surrey County Council's Bus Review, route 28 was extended back to Woking from August 2010, and this stop had 28 e-plates put back on.

English: A photo of the gas roadworks in Guildford Road, Woking, Surrey, in late August 2010. At the time, the roadworks to replace the gas pipes were on the other side of the road to where I was stood, and to the right of the photo. They had just got to the point where they had reduced the width of the road where the secondary turn around the end of the one way system (for traffic coming out of Heathside Road) is, meaning there was not enough room for large vehicles to swing around properly. As seen here, a "no entry for buses and HGVs" sign was put up, with a diversion set up to send large vehicles all the way down to the Roundabout at the end of Egley Road/Guildford Road, and back up again, which is a considerable distance just for one turn.

The bus is one of a batch of six, five of which are branded for route 91, with the sixth acting as a spare. In November 2009, 4019 has its branding revised, with extra vinyls showing off the increased Sunday service on route 91 from 22 November 2009. As part of this, the people branding seen here on the rear (each bus carried a different version) was taken off, replaced by other details.

With traffic able to use the other lane and traffic travelling in the other direction unaffected, traffic congestion was not too bad. During peak times, traffic turning right at the end of the outside lane would block progress of the much greater amount of traffic wanting to get back into the inside lane and go straight on, but in comparison with the things that happened later, disruption was minimal. However, there were still problems, such as here when a grab lorry attending to the roadworks caused this lorry towing a trailer to get stuck. File:Woking Guildford Road gas roadworks August 2009.JPG shows how little room was left for another lorry to successfully swing around the grab lorry. Eventually, after mounting various kerbs and flower beds, it got through. On the left of the photo is a RailAir coach, coming around the front of Blockbusters, on its way to Heathrow. Coaches usually leave town via Monument Road, so its appearance here would suggest traffic congestion on the usual route.

Route 437 turns left out of Heathside Road into Guildford Road, and uses the turn around the end of the one way system to turn back on itself and head along Guildford Road into Woking town centre. This took too long for buses, and with a seeming lack of communication, the bus seen in the photo ignored all the signs and try and squeeze around, ending up at a rather precarious angle on the sloped edge of the flower beds! The bus did actually go steeper than this but I didn't have the camera out in time unfortunately. A further part of the gas works saw the turn completely shut off to all vehicles, which saw buses taking the route missing the Hospital stop, or also coming out of Heathside Road, turning right a tiny bit (against the flow of the one way system), and sneaking straight across down the main turn around Blockbusters. Most people did this illegal manoeuvre while the turn was closed, and everyone got away with it, despite the fact it is right next to the police station.

I saw another go into York Road and squeeze around the mini roundabout there, to get back onto Guildford Road, and I saw one run directly from Heathside Crescent into Station Approach, and use the bigger, main turn around Blockbusters, which was free of roadworks and able to be used. Unfortunately this missed out the rather important bus stop outside the Community Hospital. As you may have guessed by now, the bus seen in the photo did none of the above options, and instead decided to ignore all the signs and try and squeeze around, ending up at a rather precarious angle on the sloped edge of the flower beds! The bus did actually go steeper than this but I didn't have the camera out in time unfortunately.

English: Countryliner DP29 (YT51 EAE), a Dennis Dart SLF/Plaxton Pointer MPD, in Cawsey Way, Woking, Surrey, on route 72. As part of Phase 1 of Surrey County Council's Bus Review, route 72 was withdrawn in August 2010, replaced by the diversion of route 437. YT51 EAE is one of a number of ex-Connex Darts which having moved on now see service outside of London. A number of sister buses also operated around Woking with Travel Surrey, such as YT51 EAA. Sometime during 2010, YT51 moved to Countryliner's operations in Sussex, and finally gained full livery with the addition of a green skirt. The ex-Connex Darts with Travel Surrey (by then Abellio Surrey), left in late 2010.

This photo shows the return trip of the one journey each way service, loading up at the main town centre bus stops in the town, to head back to Tongham. The route does carry good loads each week, and a number of passengers can be seen here waiting to board.

English: A car in Orchard Street, Newport, Isle of Wight, waits for a bus - Southern Vectis Scania OmniCity 1152 Watcombe Bay (HW09 BAA) - to reverse out of the bus station into the road, before being able to move on. The design of the new bus station is fundamentally flawed: It is too small. The bus station was designed for less buses than the amount that currently use it, so it often gets blocked up. The parking area for buses out of service consists of a 2x2 block of bays. This means that if the bus at the back needs to leave before the one parked in front of it, it has to reverse into the road, risking running someone over or hitting another vehicle, and clearly it's not particularly safe. Even more confusing it that the through road actually goes around an extra bus bay (just about visible in the left of this photo), so car drivers have to drive through the middle of manoeuvring buses.

The Post Office was in the building in the middle, on the left of the lamppost in the foreground. Plans to close the Post Office in 2003 were dropped after users did the usual complains and petitions, unfortunately however, after a while the owner decided they were no longer able to keep the Post Office open, and retired in 2005, with the Post Office closing - only "temporarily" at the time. After a spell as the "Two Fishes Delicatessen", followed by "Ratsey's Larder", it is now a hairdressers.

However, the driver of the double-decker behind rather foolishly went through the single-file section of traffic calming despite the fact he couldn't clear it, with the result buses going in the other direction couldn't get through. Because of this, 506 was also unable to move, so had to reverse into the space it is seen in here to enable the double-decker to clear the single-file section and avoid complete gridlock.

English: The top of Woodvale Road, Cowes, Isle of Wight, on the Friday of Cowes Week 2010. Friday is traditionally the last day of Cowes Week, and while in recent years extra races are held on a second Saturday of the week, the firework display to mark the end of the week is on Friday. On "Firework Night" as it is known by the locals, various traffic management procedures are put in place. Traffic is only allowed to travel west along the seafront, the Woodvale Inn (at the bottom of Woodvale Road) is where this ends, and where all the barriers are to stop traffic going along eastbound. To avoid traffic going down Woodvale Road and getting stuck, unable to turn right due to the road closure, and unable to turn left because it is a tight road where wide vehicles are banned, Woodvale Road is also closed in one direction. Traffic is only allowed up the hill, although the residents all ignore this and drive around the signs.

When photographed, this stop was served by a couple of trips on route 30 towards Cowes. A more frequent, though by no means comprehensive, service was provided from the other side of the road on circular route 32. It was planned that from 5 September, route 30 would be withdrawn, with a sole journey towards Newport that runs via Rew Street being renumbered 32. However, it would seem that the journey was not renumbered, and still runs as the number 30. Anyhow, this is now the only trip on the route, and there are no longer buses towards Cowes (rather defeating the point of having a 'return' trip to Rew Street from Cowes), and therefore the stop in this photo is no longer served on this side of the road. Wightbus never put up a bus stop flag on this side of the road.

English: Southern Vectis 1107 Shippards Chine (HW58 ARZ), a Scania OmniCity, in Cowes, Isle of Wight, on route 1. It is at the Round House, and is turning from Place Road into Park Road on its way into Cowes. It was the Friday of Cowes Week 2010, and so was Firework Night at the time. The fireworks had finished at this point, hence the queue of cars heading back to Newport and beyond. The bus was carrying a surprising number of passengers into Cowes considering the fireworks were over, no doubt their aim was instead to get totally drunk... Traffic management has been put in place here for the last few years on Firework Night, blocking off access from Park Road/Place Road to Tuttons Hill/Baring Road, and sending traffic from Baring Road through Gurnard on diversion. This avoids cars having to take turns at this roundabout, and it works quite well, as the huge stationary queues along Baring Road and Park Road no longer occur, instead there is more of a steady flow of traffic. Seen in the photo are the traffic cones forcing vehicles to go from Park Road into Place Road and vice versa. The bus has "Cowes" on the destination display, instead of the usual "Cowes via Round House". I do not understand why this is allowed to happen on Firework Night, as the bus is going via the Round House, so it should show it as normal, to avoid confusing passengers who want the Park & Ride leg of the route.

This photo was taken from Baring Road, between the Zig Zag and Ward Avenue, and looks down over the hill across the Solent. The fireworks had finished a few minutes before the photograph was taken.

The fireworks are launched off a barge in the Solent, so obviously boats moored nearby have a better view than people watching from the shore. The Red Arrows were due to perform beforehand, hence some people are already waiting, however the Red Arrows were cancelled at the last minute due to poor visibility (the fog can be seen in the photo). Visibility at Bournemouth Airport, where the Red Arrows were due to take off from, was only 300 yards when the decision to cancel was taken. Route 93 was run from Arriva's Horsham depot, at Warnham railway station. Despite being deep into Surrey, route 465 is a Transport for London contracted route throughout - between Kingston and Dorking, and therefore London Buses style warning signs like these are used, which is most unusual. If it were not a TfL route there would be no chance of the sign being here. Route 465 is the TfL route that extends furthest south compared to any other route in the network, so this is probably the southernmost low tree warning sign ever to have been put up! Also of note is that route 465 is run with single-deckers, so this is presumably only one of a few low tree warning signs for single-deckers, which are obviously much less affected by low trees than double-deckers.

This section of the road, between Clandon Crossroads (the junction with Epsom Road/Shere Road) and the entrance to Clandon Park (the National Trust property) often floods after heavy rain, because the road dips down and so collects water. The muddy verges also help block the drains. The flood is not overly large but is still quite substantial, especially to drivers who are not used to it.

English: The bus stop at Westcott Green, Westcott, Surrey. It is served by routes 21, 22 and 32. As can be seen, the bus shelter has a rather novel thatched roof, which matches the dovecot. In early 2009, the bus shelter was re-thatched. I had wanted to take a photo of it looking new, but by the time I got round to this photo it was a couple of months too late. The rain at the time of the photograph didn't help either.
