History
[edit]- 1929 Named: Hikawa Maru for the Nippon Yusen Kaisya Line, Tokyo
- Late 1941 Refitted to hospital ship
- During the war she struck mines on three occasions, however due to her extra thick steel plating she suffered only minor damage.
- 1945 Seized by the US government for transport US personal between the United States and Japan
- 1947 Operated as a simple freighter to the United States East Coast
- 1954 Refitted into a passenger liner
- 1960 End of service
- 1961 Owner: Hikawa Maru Kanko Co. Hulked to a floating youth hostel and a maritime museum in front of Yamashita Park
- 1973 Hotel closed, continued to operate as a Maritime Museum, restaurant and banquet facility
- 2003 Declared “cultural asset” to Yokohama.
- 12.2006 officially closed. Sold to NYK Line
- 08.2007 Restoration started
- 25.04.2008 Renamed NYK Hikawamaru however the name on her hull is unchanged. Reopened to the public
