Species identification
[edit]The original author of this image identified it as Scotophilus borbonicus. So why did I not? Because Scotophilus borbonicus:
- has never been seen west of Madagascar, but the photographer claims this image was taken in South Africa.
- has not been seen by scientists for nearly 140 years.[1]
- may be extinct.[2]
So if it is that species, it's the scientific find of the century!
The image may be of Scotophilus dinganii, which is common in South Africa; but I am not a biologist.
