Move to "World population growth rate history.svg"

[edit]

The y axis is labelled "growth rate" for good reasons: a rate of increase (second derivative) is very different than an increase (first derivative). World population is "increasing" at over 80 million people per year, but the "growth rate" shown here is 1 or 2 percent per year. So calling the graph an "increase" is incorrect, and thus the guidelines for File renaming are satisfied.

The sister .png file should also be moved.

Actually, "rate of increase" is just a more precise way of saying, "rate of change" (it's rate of change with the additional information that it's increasing), which is the first derivative. The amount of increase is not the first derivative, so the rate of increase can't be the second. However, I do agree that using "growth rate" in the title would be more descriptive. On the other hand, the graph also predicts the growth rate out into the future, so using the term "history" might be misleading. How about just "File:World population growth rate 1950–2050.svg"? - dcljr (talk) 20:04, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The file has been moved. - dcljr (talk) 09:26, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, folks. You're right about rate of increase being a first derivative. I meant to say The y axis is labelled "growth rate" for good reasons: the growth rate it shows (second derivative) is very different than a rate of increase (first derivative). Needs an update

[edit]

This file hasn't been updated since 2011. Could we get more accurate figures for the past few years, or new estimates until 2050? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arossmorrison (talk • contribs) 09:00, 12 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Conscious: @Ninjatacoshell: How could we update this file? A455bcd9 (talk) 20:56, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I found this: https://www.census.gov/population/international/data/worldpop/table_population.php it's written "Revised:September 27, 2016" but this date appears on all page of the website, not only for this table. A455bcd9 (talk) 21:03, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
