This is a great map, and I'm astonished it isn't linked to any articles. Seems perfect for the Cold War article! However... could a description of the color coding, colored crossmarks, and the like please be added by the author or others with good knowledge?
I presume the bold blue is the U.S. and NATO allies, the bold red is Soviet allies, the yellow is China alone, the medium blue marks explicit U.S. allies, and the medium red marks explicit Soviet allies.
I'm also presuming the light blue depicts the explicitly non-aligned nations, as it colors India, Yugoslavia, Iran, Switzerland, and Austria, which I *know* were all trying to be deeply uninvolved in the Cold War in 1980.
The pink might indicate Islamic nations? Somehow? Confused about the pink, really.
I'm assuming all the red and blue crosmarks indicate active areas of military conflict at that time. The green crossmarks seem to indicate sectarian conflicts in Northern Ireland and Israel/Palestine.
Whatever the case, it's good work.

This helped me make much more sense of this: Guerra Fria 1980
