This image was used in this episode of "I Drew This", dated March 14, 2005. It's not credited, so I sent this message:

Subject: The villain in "I Drew This" for March 14, 2005.

Hi! I noticed that your villain from the March 14, 2005 strip is
pretty similar to the 'Villain' illustration from Wikipedia:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Villianc.svg

You're, of course, free to use the image--that's what the Commons is
for--but the license does require attribution, and that derivative
works be made available under the same license. (I don't know if the
strip is considered a derivative work, as it merely incorporates the
image.) If you could make a note that the "Villain" image is derived
from this illustration, and link back to the above URL from the
archive page, that would be excellent.

Thanks!

I'll post a reply here if I get one. grendel|khan 03:06, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your post at COM:VP. Because the image is licensed under the GFDL, the requirements are even a bit more restrictive: the author of the comic strip must distribute the strip with a copy of the the text of the GFDL. In the case of the comic strip, I think it would be appropriate if the author posted a notice below the image linking to this image, mentioning that the frame is a derivative work of this image, and linking to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:GNU_Free_Documentation_License. --Iamunknown 04:19, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The response:

But it's not derived from that specific illustration. It's Snidely
Whiplash, Dudley Do-Right's nemesis, one of the most iconic cartoon
villains of the 20th century. (Well, maybe that specific image was the
one that came up when I googled "Snidely Whiplash" two years ago.)

I use iconic cartoon characters all the time; it's perfectly legal and
in fact rather common.

I replied:

Ah. Egg on me, then; I was thrown off by how similar the illustrations
were.

I'm still trying to sort out the legal requirements around derivative works. Isn't this image itself a representation of w:Snidely Whiplash and thus subject to the copyright on that character (not due to lapse for another 26 years minimum)? --CBDunkerson 13:01, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's iconic. This copyright crap is ridiculous --65.161.73.250 20:58, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the picture and Snidely look the same because all stereotypical villians look the same: top hat, handlebar mustache, evil grin, wringing hands... It's not a picture of Snidely, but a picture of the stock character Snidely is modeled after. I think this picture should be kept. Scoutersig 18:58, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
