I believe this diagram is wrong.
The image on the left should show a change in amplitude. It is this change in amplitude that is in fact the source of thickness measurement. Pulse echo's reflecting off the void would produce a higher amplitude reflection due to the shorter distance travelled. For the time of flight to be used to measure the depth to the flaw another probe would be required to provide a baseline speed of sound through the medium. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 109.159.15.47 (talk) 22:38, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
