Identification
[edit]Despite the caption, this would appear to be the USS Petrel, which was in Portsmouth from November 1910 to January 1911. It had three masts on arrival (see photo of it earlier in 1910 in Genoa here, which shows three masts but all other details seem to match). Photos from a few years later when on station in Guantanamo show only two masts on the Petrel, so maybe it was removed during the stay in Portsmouth. I can't find any other gunboats though which match the gunwale contours, whereas the Petrel does. The Marietta's funnel was in a different position and had a different shape, not to mention a different stern shape, so no way is this photo of that ship.
