Oppose I definitely OPPOSE the deletion request. Revent has made it his task to upload files in TIF and jpeg-Format and wants to delete any other ones. I do not agree with his naming policies and this photo is not exactly the same as the one from the NARA-uploads. It is cropped and has a higher JPEG-resolution. I would prefer it Revent would leave it to a discussion about deleting files. Also, I do not understand why older files cannot be overwritten with highres files now being available, just because Revent wants the catalog file name in the file name. Highres files could replace the old lowres ones and could be renamed, like Revent and I have already done. I, again, want to stress that there are often three versions of the NARA files, the TIF, a JPEG of the TIF and a JPEG that is cropped, levels adjusted etc. Cobatfor (talk) 16:53, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Cobatfor: You do realize I reverted myself about a minute after I flagged this, right? It had, tbh, nothing to do with my uploads, other than I noticed it while uploading about half a dozen other images of this ship. I probably would have noticed sooner that they weren't duplicates except that they were in two different categories for the same ship. Either way, it was no longer flagged to go away about a day before you pinged me here.
I'm sorry that I seem to have irritated you, for whatever reason... it's not my intention. It is, however, standard practice to include the record number in the file name when importing material from GLAMs... the very NARA files you mentioned do the exact same thing. I could simply just upload the higher resolution versions and leave them as duplicates, but someone would eventually flag them anyhow. If the differences appear to be anything other than the 'random' result of people having uploaded poor reproductions that they obtained third-hand, I either leave them alone or duplicate the exact crop as closely as I can. - Reventtalk 17:37, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I did not realize this. I edited and renamed file File:USS Arctic (AF-7) underway off the Mare Island Naval Shipyard on 29 October 1941 (19-N-25858).jpg. Would you propose to do it like with the NARA-files: one TIFF, one JPEG of the TIFF and one edited JPEG, or is this okay for you in this way? Cheers Cobatfor (talk) 19:01, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Cobatfor: I'm perfectly fine with the jpegs I upload being edited.. really, I'm just uploading them as a 'minimally usable' version of the original tiff (only the most basic crop), and kinda hoping that someone will improve them... if you notice, I mark the tiffs 'please don't edit', but not the jpegs. I'm really just making the jpegs because the borders (and the terrible rendering of tiff thumbnails) makes them awkward to use as anything but source material, and because there are so many really low-quality scans from navsource or hyperwar. Really, other than including the ID, the names I'm creating are just a matter of efficiency.... if you were not aware, I've now uploaded over a thousand NHHC images, and probably 90%+ were not previously on Commons. I'm actually using a script to do this... it's not a bot, but it's definitely 'semi-automated', because to import all this material purely 'by hand' would be insane. - Reventtalk 20:01, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I assumed this. I do not know, how many NHHC-files I loaded up in the last 10 years, but the NHHC has made a quantum leap last year with providing the TIFF-files. Although, some are sadly only b/w, when the old jpegs were coloured and, some highres-files are really dark. However, this is only a small portion and there are many, many new photos. :-) I would like to offer, if you replace a lowres with a highres jpeg, just give me a short notice and I will see about the editing and renaming, if necessary.
