Different maps of a changing eruption event were uploaded with the same file name. Please reconsider, if this is a sustainable procedure. The maps for different stages of the eruption should be rather available as individual maps. Furthermore USGS Kīlauea maps are numbered individually, therefore keeping these numbers in the file name makes it easier to refer to the original source. I felt it was best to have one file name as it allowed someone to see the progression when looking at the history here. I'm not sure if it causes any issue is someone references prior revisions to show the history or progression. I didn't anticipate showing all the older files on the w:2018 lower Puna eruption page this links to but maybe it will make sense to at some point. I have no problem with it being done another way if that makes more sense, go for it if that seems best. Even this page could be renamed if appropriate. Are there any best practice guidelines about things like this to be aware of? Pmaccabe (talk) 05:06, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, as far as I know most projects link to the description page which uses the current (last) version as a thumbnail. Therefore it seems to me a better idea to create a chronological story with different maps in the articles, not here as a history of versions with the same name. Because I didn't want to force anyone to follow my idea, I uploaded File:USGS_Kīlauea_image-436.jpg again and used it in w:en:2018 lower Puna eruption, but it was deleted as a duplicate and replaced by File:USGS-Kīlauea2018-EasternRiftZoneMap.jpg ([1]). In w:en:2018 lower Puna eruption and w:de:Puʻu ʻŌʻō the map is used to show the specific episode of the ocean entry (maybe in other projects as well) and therefore should not be changed anymore. If you or other users want to update File:USGS-Kīlauea2018-EasternRiftZoneMap.jpg again with a different map, please straighten this out with user:Túrelio (cf. [2]) in advance. I agree. And I’m sorry. :-) - Sloyment (talk) 00:23, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
