county/city-county conficts

[edit]

In the id field, where I added "_city" to the names of conflicting city-counties, I now realize that, as this map is meant for machine processing based on the FIPS code, I really could have left the county & city names the same in the id field. The FIPS code acts as the disambiguator, and that's all that I'll be using from this field in the application that I need this for. I could have made the id field just the FIPS code, actually. But at this point I am not going to upload a new version. Kbh3rd (talk) 03:32, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have created a new version of this map in which the id field is only the FIPS code. Since my intention is to use that as a key to correlate the svg objects with FIPS-identified data, that's all I need, and I assume that's all others will need for the same purpose. It's much more straightforward and sane, and the city/county issue doesn't affect the FIPS code at all. The name and state for each county is in the label if it's needed for display to humans.

I also added thin black borders on all the counties. The border is needed if a county is rendered in white or near-white, which is likely to happen if color density is used to visualize data. That exactly is the case with the application for which I needed to create this FIPS-coded map. -- Kbh3rd (talk) 19:16, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

small corrections...

[edit]

Hi, I fixed three counties that did not have an `inkscape:label` element: "West Feliciana, LA" (22125), "Jefferson, LA" (22051), "Laurens, SC" (45059). Thanks for such a great SVG!!! -- Joebeone (talk) 21:27, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

One other noted change

[edit]

Yukon-Koyukuk, AL should be Yukon-Koyukuk, AK. I'm going through, making a derivative of this map for work, and this turned up. If someone else could fix this, that could work. Alternatively, I could upload the fixed file once my 4-days-wait is up.Jstnptchtt (talk) 13:51, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CSS version

[edit]

The version over at Usa counties large.svg is similarly coded to this but with the FIPS code as a class identifier and the name in the id field. This allows colouring using a simply css insertion into the top of the file. Also it removes the reliance on inkscape and sodipod elements and reduces the file size by a third. /Lokal_Profil 01:35, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Correcting FIPS code for three Alaska counties

[edit]

I'm using this file matched up to current US census data, and the FIPS code for the following three AK counties has changed:

FIPS code source: http://www2.census.gov/geo/docs/reference/codes/files/st02_ak_cou.txt Also see: https://www.census.gov/geo/reference/codes/cou.html (Select "Alaska" to generate file linked above)

Skagway-Hoonah-Angoon, AK
SVG File is: 232
Census.gov should be: 230
Wrangell-Petersburg, AK
SVG File is: 280
Census.gov should be: 195
Prince of Wales-Outer Ketchikan, AK
SVG File is: 201
Census.gov should be: 198

I'm not sure how to go about submitting a correction to the source file, but I think these three FIPS codes should be corrected to match current data.

Thanks.
