The building is located on land bounded on the west 138 feet by Broadway, on the south 150 feet by State Street, and on the east by Dean Street. Fronting on Broadway Street. The present site was purchased in June of 1874, Construction was commenced in June, 1877, completed in 1884, and occupied the same year. Cost of construction was $623,565.21. The U.S. Post Office occupied the first floor, the upper floors were for Customs, Weather Bureau, Internal Revenue, and the U.S. Courts.
