This is my great grandfathers grave site, Edward Schnaubelt. It has a unique story behind it. One thing you that you may or may not find interesting is that Edwards brohter is Rudolph Schnaubelt (1863-1901) who may have been the culprit behind the haymarket bombings. This epitaph is located in a majestic little town called Trinidad, CA; which is about 10 miles north of Arcata California where i went to college (Humboldt State). My great grandfather, Edward, was a hard working family man who was murdered because of his egalitarian beliefs. Him and his business partner once owned a small lumber company just North of Trinidad. He paid his workers an honest wage and treated them well. His fair and civilized treatment of his workers was frowned upon by the other lumber companies in the area. Unfortunately, his business partner sold their company to a larger timber company in the area without his consent or permission. Within days of the buy out, Adolph and his oldest son (my grandfather's brother OR my uncle Henry) went back to gather some equipment that he felt was still his by right of ownership. Upon arrival he was greeted by a night watchman who shot him while his son (my uncle Henry) watched in horror. My Uncle Henry quickly ran back home to notify my great grandmother about the events that transpired that fateful evening. Several days later, my great grandmother tried to take legal action against the timber company. In the end, the attorney died under "mysterious" circumstances and my family eventually relocated to the Sacramento area. However, before they left Trinidad , and because they were German immigrants, she had Adolph’s tombstone inscribed with the epitaph "murdered by capitalism". If you are ever by chance in the Arcata/Trinidad area, please feel free to stop by and check out the epitaph and place some flowers on his grave. It is located in the small Trinidad cemetery against the fence in the very back. It has become quite popular among epitaph etching enthusiasts who frequent the tombstone with their charcoal and paper. It has also become quite popular among the town's citizens.

I have inserted a link that shows a picture of Rudolph Schnaubelt, Edward's brother, who may have have been responsible for the throwing the bomb in the infamous Haymarket riots.
