image scale and timestamp

[edit]

This file could use a bar with scaled km and mile units as well as according time stamps, it would really help understand and interpret this picture. Are there any information? 91.96.145.170 23:47, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This animation isn't reprojected from the satellite perspective so a scale cannot be applied correctly. At nadir the satellite has a pixel resolution of 500 meters, but this is on the limb of view so the resolution may be closer to 750 m. Maybe I can create another animation with a scale, and time. I see the angle will be a little troubling getting a proper scientific scale, but i think it would still help to put a scale saying "approx. this and that km/mi" to get a gist of what dimensions we're looking at. If you have access to those information, please update this pic or at least put them here, so that it can be worked on :) Thanks for your attention! 91.96.205.41 14:52, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have uploaded a version with a scale and timestamp in the corners. This scene has been reprojected so that each pixel represents 750 meters. Hope it helps. Tonga_Eruption_GOES-17_1-15-2022_annotated.gif Supportstorm (talk) 02:01, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Supportstorm, what product of GOES-17 is this from? The angle looks too far east for it to be 17, but 16 is too far east. Just trying to figure the details of this one out. Huntster (t @ c) 21:10, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

These are geocolor images I processed using the netcdf files of the red, blue, and near-IR channels. The eruption was in view of GOES-17, but not GOES-16. Here's a full disk image around the time of the last frame showing where on the disk the image was taken indicated by the box: https://imgur.com/a/Zn5gOho.
